What not to send when your child has gone quiet

Everything on this list feels like love when you send it. None of it lands that way.

Avoid

  • Anything that needs answering. "Are you okay?" feels like care to you. It arrives as homework.
  • "Why won't you talk to me?" Never, however gently it's phrased. It makes a child responsible for an adult relationship.
  • Anything about the case or the other parent. It matters even more at this age, because they're reading it themselves with no one filtering it.
  • Long messages. Length is pressure. Three sentences is usually the ceiling, and often one is better.
  • Messages sent in a burst. Five messages after a bad day reads as instability, and it's the easiest thing in the world to screenshot.
  • Replies to a snub. Silence isn't a rejection you need to respond to. Treat it like weather, and keep to your rhythm.
  • Evidence. No screenshots, no documents, no proof.

About that last one

The urge to show them the truth (the messages, the dates, the order things happened) is one of the strongest in this whole situation. It's also almost always fatal to the relationship.

You can't change what someone believes by showing them a file. It doesn't work at any age, and at this one it ends things. It asks a child to conclude that a parent lied to them. Nobody gets there by being shown a document. They get there slowly, on their own, or not at all.

Your job is to still be there either way.

One test

Before you send anything, ask:

Does this require them to do something?

If yes, don't.

General information, not legal advice. Court process differs between countries and regions; check anything that matters to your case with a qualified lawyer where you live.

In the workbook

Chapter 21 of the workbook covers keeping contact alive when it's indirect, including older children and replying when a reply comes. Worksheet N includes a checklist to run before anything is sent.
